Sunset's can be amazing.
As the day ends, the sky catches fire. Burning the last of the day away as the twilight begins.
The burning sky also marks the beginning of the witching hour for those with dementia.
At first you won't notice.
Little slips. A wrong word here and there.
The wrong name used.
But as the sunset of their lives becomes closer, the witching hour becomes more vivid and scary.
The trees become monsters in the twilight.
The evening star no longer lights the way and as the darkness comes the stars begin to turn and spin and toss the mind like a sailor on a stormy sea.
With some sundowns you see your loved one drifting further away.
And some nights its like a switch has been flipped.
They are there one moment. And then they are gone.
And as you drift into the warm embrace of sleep you can only hope that the witching hour will release your loved one back to you as the night ends and the sun rises again.
